In Remembrance - lest we forget
Blossoms of hope? Arras, Spring 1918

Painted by ambulance-driver Alec (my grandfather) using a child's paint box & poor-quality paper, this picture shows the trees coming back to life after the bombardments of the 2nd Battle of The Somme - an expression of his hope that 1914-18 really would be "the war to end all wars".  My grandfather never spoke of his WW1 experiences but my mother remembered him screaming in his sleep for the rest of his life.
